Description

Ship Construction - materials, welding and cutting, shipyard practice and major ship structural components. Influence of classification society rules and other regulations on construction details.
Introduction to rationally-based structural design and optimization. Loading and responses in ship and offshore structures. Bending of the hull girder - linear deterministic approach. Statistical predictions of wave-induced loads and hull girder response. Application of (Vlasov) extended beam theory to include non-circular torsion -hull girder analysis of open-deck vessels.
Fatigue and fracture of ship structures - fatigue of welded constructions. S-N curve approach to assess fatigue life of steel and aluminium constructions. Fracture mechanics - basic concepts, prediction of fatigue life, crack growth, inspection and maintenance requirements. Application to ship structural joints.
