Description


Introduces specific features of Japanese discourse and how they are socio-culturally interpreted. Presents a variety of approaches to Japanese discourse analysis through an application of the structures and strategies of Japanese discourse to daily communication in Japanese.

Learning Outcomes


Upon successful completion of the course, students should:
  • Be able to identify their communication style in Japanese
  • Have identified and extended their knowledge of the Japanese communication style
  • Be able to develop communication skills by using listener/speaker's reactive strategies effectively
  • Be able to discuss Japanese written and spoken discourse by analysing daily communication
  • Be able to make a basic transcript of a dyadic conversation
  • Be able to reflect on the focused topic in an informed manner.

  • Reflective journal and discussion with a Japanese partner - 40%
  • Transcript of a dyadic conversation - 10%
  • Two minor assignments - 20% (10% each)
  • Major assignment - 30%
