The Master of Global Health (Extension) (MGHext) equips graduates with the knowledge and skills in public health required to overcome a broad range of highly complex population health issues in local and global settings. The MGHext program trains global health leaders of tomorrow, who are work-ready, robust and flexible to work across many settings and jurisdictions. You will graduate with a firm understanding of global health issues, advanced disciplinary knowledge and technical capacities, as well as the passion to drive solutions in global health. The MGHext provides graduates with additional specialised research skills required not only for the execution of research, but for its commissioning, funding, assessment and evaluation. These skills are highly valued in research and population health-based roles, which help to shape global health priorities. You will be taught by our experienced multidisciplinary team of research-active academics who work across the Asia-Pacific and sub-Saharan African regions and beyond. Our MGHext graduates typically find work through a range of employers, including government Ministries and Departments of Health, bilateral and multilateral international aid organisations, civil society and other NGOs, academia, primary care and community healthcare services in the public and private sectors in Australia and internationally.

Program Structure

Students must complete 72 UOC when taken as a standalone program.

1. Core Courses - 24 UOC
2. Global Health Prescribed Electives - 18-42 UOC
3. Research Methodology or Extension Project and Coursework - 24 UOC
4. Prescribed Elective courses - 0-6 UOC
5. Infectious Diseases Control Specialisation – 0-24 UOC. Students who wish to complete the specialisation must complete 18 UOC of specialisation electives that also meet Global Health Prescribed Elective requirements of the program AND/OR the prescribed elective component of the Research Methodology or Extension Project and Coursework component of the program.
6. PHCM9100 - Academic Practice - 0 UOC - Required enrolment for International students who completed their previous studies in a non-English speaking country

Award with Excellence

The Award with Excellence is awarded in coursework masters programs, including Masters (Extension) but with the exception of Masters (Extended) such as JD and MD, when a Weighted Average Mean (WAM) of at least 80% has been achieved and at least 50% of the requirements of the award are completed at UNSW. All eligible programs will award 'with Excellence' except in special circumstances where approval of Academic Board has been given for a program to opt out.
