Overview

The Master of Teaching provides an advanced postgraduate initial secondary teaching qualification for both government and non-government schools in New South Wales and in all other states in Australia. While the first year of study is fixed (students will overload and complete 4 courses each term), the second year of study is more flexible and can be finished at the end of Term 1, 2, or 3. Students can also opt to take the program part-time and be eligible to teach after their second year of study. Please refer to the sample programs for more information on the different structures. Fully online mode is only available to domestic students and students not on an international student visa.

Program Structure

Students must complete 96 UOC when taken as a standalone program.

The program consists of a sequence of compulsory and elective units, including six core education units, four subject teaching area units (called methods), three electives, and two professional experience placements, including an internship.

The program requires students to study two single teaching specialisations, or one double teaching specialisation (available only for English, Mathematics, Music and Visual Arts) from those methods listed below. Applicants require a recognised Bachelor degree with studies in the relevant teaching specialisation(s):

First teaching specialisation – a major, consisting of a sequence of at least six units of undergraduate study in a teaching area, with no more than two at first year and at least two at third year.

Additional teaching specialisation – a minor consisting of a sequence of at least  four units of undergraduate study in a teaching area, with at least two of these at second year or above).

Compulsory Training Component

As the program includes supervised teaching experience, including an internship, in at least two different secondary schools, all full-time students must be available for five days per week for the full school day (approximately 8.30am - 4.00pm) in late May-June and in October-December. Part-time students will need to do their final school placement on a full-time basis.

Award with Excellence
For more information, please visit:
The Award with Excellence is awarded in coursework masters programs, including Masters (Extension) but with the exception of Masters (Extended) such as JD and MD, when a Weighted Average Mean (WAM) of at least 80% has been achieved and at least 50% of the requirements of the award are completed at UNSW. All eligible programs will award 'with Excellence' except in special circumstances where approval of Academic Board has been given for a program to opt out.
