Our MHLMext program develops work-ready leaders who can drive change, enhance quality, and develop and execute well-considered management decisions to impact the health service and systems in which they work. Through the extension program, you will graduate with an integrated understanding of contemporary health leadership and management, equipped with the core skills in research required to enhance health service delivery.

Through the MHLMext, you will graduate equipped with the knowledge, skills and attributes required for leadership and managerial roles in healthcare. You will gain both the theoretical understanding and practical skills necessary for leadership and management across strategic planning, policy development, change management, quality enhancement and decision-making. The MHLMext provides the opportunity for you to extend your knowledge and skills in health services research by completing additional research methodology courses and/or an advanced research project in a health services-related topic.

Our MHLMext program develops work-ready leaders who can drive change, enhance quality, and develop and execute well-considered management decisions to impact the health service and systems in which they work. Through the extension program, you will graduate with an integrated understanding of contemporary health leadership and management, equipped with the core skills in research required to enhance health service delivery.

Program Structure

Students must complete 72 UOC when taken as a standalone program.

1. Core Courses - 30 UOC
2. Research Methodology or Extension Project and Coursework - 24 UOC
3. Prescribed Electives - 18 UOC
4. PHCM9100 - Academic Practice - 0 UOC - Required enrolment for International students who completed their previous studies in a non-English speaking country

Core Courses30 Units of Credit:

Research Methodology or Extension Project and Coursework

Extension program students have two options to complete the extension component of their program (24UOC):

1. Students must complete at least 6UOC of approved research methodology coursework listed below and additional prescribed electives (18UOC); or

2. Students who achieve a WAM of greater or equal to 75% in a minimum 18 UOC of their program may elect to undertake a research project in place of course electives as either:
- 6 UOC research project and 3 additional prescribed elective courses (18 UOC); or
- 12 UOC research project and 2 additional prescribed elective courses (12UOC); or
- 18 UOC major research project and 1 additional prescribed elective course (6 UOC).

Part-time students can complete the 12 UOC Project (PHCM9144) part time by enrolling in PHCM9145 (6 UOC) in two consecutive terms or the 18 UOC Major Project (PHCM9150) by enrolling in PHCM9151 (9UOC) in two consecutive terms or PHCM9152 (6 UOC) in three consecutive terms.

Academic Practice: International Students

International students who completed their previous studies in a non-English speaking country are required to take PHCM9100 Academic Practice. Domestic students who completed their previous studies in a non-English speaking country are also encouraged to take PHCM9100 Academic Practice.

It is recommended that this course is taken in the first term of study. This course is made available at no charge to students and does not contribute to the UOC requirements of the degree.

Minimum Entry Requirements

There are two pathways for entry and a third exceptional pathway:

1. Applicants must have
a) A three year undergraduate degree in a field relevant to public health, global health or health management (see list below)*
and
b) Two years of full-time professional or volunteer experience in a relevant field (see list below)**. The professional experience may include experience in health or public health services acquired as part of a degree of 4 or more years duration, e.g. MBBS, MD.

2. Applicants must have
a) An undergraduate degree plus an honours
or
b) Postgraduate degree in a field relevant to public health, global health or health management (see list below)*

3. In exceptional circumstances, applications will be considered for entry when they have extensive professional health or public health experience but do not hold a relevant degree qualification. A minimum of five years full-time relevant professional experience is required and an interview with the School of Population Health may be conducted.

*Fields of study that are relevant include, but are not restricted to, medicine, nursing, allied health, health sciences, biomedical sciences, dentistry, sociology, behavioural and social sciences, social work, psychology, marketing, human services, emergency services, environmental health, veterinary science, health administration, business, management, engineering, law, science, mathematics and statistics, economics, policy studies and development studies

** Fields of professional experience that are relevant include, but are not restricted to roles in health (including allied health, medicine, nursing, oral health, public health, environmental health, psychology) and human services (e.g. social work, community development, service navigation, case management) service provision or management, experience in roles that have involved working on health-related activities, e.g. jobs in emergency services, management, research, engineering, law, science, mathematics and statistics, economics, journalism or policy roles where you have been working on health.

Applications will be assessed in accordance with the UNSW Recognition of Prior Learning Policy and Procedure.

The Award with Excellence is awarded in coursework masters programs, including Masters (Extension) but with the exception of Masters (Extended) such as JD and MD, when a Weighted Average Mean (WAM) of at least 80% has been achieved and at least 50% of the requirements of the award are completed at UNSW. All eligible programs will award 'with Excellence' except in special circumstances where approval of Academic Board has been given for a program to opt out.
